Gina Mangieri is an American journalist currently reporting for KHON in Hawaii. She joined the station in 2004. In addition to her journalism career, she is also the founder of The Cole Academy, which started as a toddler and preschool downtown center educating 100 children. Cole, Gina’s son was also a toddler at the preschool. After a year they had planned a major expansion into West Oahu, where the new center will accommodate and educate another 120 children.
The idea for the preschool came about when Gina who at the time was the editor of Pacific Business News came from maternity leave and needed good childcare but none of the centers available met her desired standards. She started thinking and finally decided to make one for herself. She began gathering experts from the field to help bring her vision to life, soon Gina became more enthralled with the philosophy of early childhood education. And as time went by demand for enrollment doubled, tripled, even quadrupled compared to her initial concept.
She then decided that it was time for a transition, so she could focus on the demands of building the largest infant, toddler, and preschool center in Hawaii. Gina devoted her full attention to bring life to The Cole Academy. It was a change that seemed to mean leaving behind journalism, which was her core profession.
After taking a break to build the first downtown school which took a period of 6 months, she got back into journalism working for both KHON2, and KGMB9, as the Interactive News Director, handling the multimedia sites for both stations, and currently, an on-air reporter for KHON2.
